Proud of Pubs

This week (11-19 July) licensees, politicians and the public united behind a week of positive action for the pub trade. Proud of Pubs Week– a national and local celebration of pubs – is promoting the positive message about the pub trade to as many people as possible. The overriding message was that pubs are great!

As part of the Proud of Pubs Week Publicans across the UK invited their local MP to visit them. On Friday July 17 Bridgend MP Madeleine Moon visited the Red Dragon on Litchard Hill to meet the people behind the bar and find out more about the industry.

The pub industry has been hit hard in recent years and the British Beer and Pub Association reports that pubs are currently closing at a record rate of 39 a week, almost 6 every day. But the Red Dragon is bucking the trend. The Bridgend pub was extensively refurbished last year and has since become a thriving pub for the entire community, raising thousands for local charities in the process. Travis Beacham, manager of the pub said: "The local pub is an important part of any local community, and it is vital that we do all we can to promote and protect them. Trade here has been good but we’re always working hard to make sure that continues."

Speaking of her visit to the pub, Madeleine Moon MP said: "Wow! Really impressed with the new look Red Dragon. It just shows you how pubs can fit in to local communities and be smart, comfortable, family orientated places to spend your time. Community pubs with a welcoming atmosphere, that know and value their customers still have a market out there that values them and enjoys all they have to offer."
