A lighter approach from Brains
Wales biggest brewer SA Brain and Co Ltd has adopted a lighter approach to its bottled beer production. Brains has reduced the amount of glass used in its beer bottles by 26%, meaning its 500ml bottles now weigh in at 300g, down from 405g.
SA Gold is the first to go light, but all other bottles within the Brains range – including Dark, SA, and The Rev James – will follow.
Production of Brains’ bottled range has increased tenfold in the last year and the company now averages around one million bottles a year. Richard Davies, Sales and Marketing explains the impact of the switch; "At our current production rate we will save 105 tonnes of glass. Not only does this help reduce energy and waste, the lighter bottle also means that delivery vehicles can carry 14% more stock. We are predicting that sales of our bottled beers will continue to grow, which makes the introduction of the lighter bottle all the more important."
Weighing in at 300g a bottle of Brains beer is now one of the lightest around. The new taller and slimmer bottle of Brains SA Gold will soon hit the supermarket shelves of Morrison’s, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.
