Craig Palfrey of Old St Mellons put his knowledge of the ‘Beautiful Game’ to good use and netted himself £20,000 when he faced TV quiz show host Chris Tarrant in the final of Heineken UK’s Who Wants to Be a Football Millionaire?
Craig’s journey to Elstree television studios began in the summer when he entered the ‘Football Millionaire’ promotion after buying a pint of Strongbow at the Brains owned Three Horseshoes pub in Gabalfa, Cardiff.
Heineken UK’s Who Wants To Be A Football Millionaire? promotion ran in more than 13,000 pubs and clubs across the UK the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament and Craig was one of 10 consumers who were drawn from thousands of entrants hoping to win a place in the national finals of the football quiz.
Craig’s wife Gayle was in the studio audience to see him win the show’s familiar ‘fastest finger first’ knock-out and secure a place in the hot-seat before facing Chris Tarrant in a bid to win up to £1 million in prize money. With a little help from his ‘phone-a-friend’ father Doug he made it to the £20,000 mark, which he has since split with his friend Andrew Shaw.
He explains "I entered the competition with tickets Andrew and I had jointly collected at the pub and we agreed that if I got anywhere I would give him half of the money. Naturally I wish I’d been able to go all the way so I could’ve split £1million, but £10,000 each still gave us reason to celebrate. On Saturday we put on a few drinks for friends, family and staff, which was a great way to say thanks to the pub."
Craig has long been a regular at the Merthyr Road pub. He and his team from Sporting Llandaff FC, who compete in Division 1 of Cardiff & District Football League, meet regularly after a game.
Craig, a certified financial planner who owns Cardiff based company ‘Penguin’ (www.penguinwealth.com), will no doubt already have plans for his winnings. More used to offering financial advice to others, Craig is now looking at his own investment options.
