The managers of Abergavenny pub The Lamb and Flag have been named ‘Managers of the Year 2010’ by Wales’ leading pub company S.A Brain and Co Ltd. Dave and Angela Lewis, who have run the Monmouthshire pub for the last 20 years, collected the award plus a £5,000 cheque at an ceremony held in Cardiff.
But the Lewis family had yet more reason to celebrate. The couple’s son Matthew was named Brains’ Chef of the Year 2010 for the second year in a row. Matthew, who has moved through the ranks from kitchen porter to chef, also won the title in 2009.
Philip Lay, Retail Director at Brains said: "Angela and Dave were competing against managers from more than 110 Brains pubs for the title Manager of the Year, so to win was a huge achievement. They’ve worked hard to grow the business and the award is richly deserved. Matthew is equally hard working and, as his double award win shows, is also hugely talented."
Prizes of £1,000 were also handed out to category winners. The Maltsters in Llandaff, Cardiff picked up the food pub of the year, the Pumphouse in Swansea was named best community pub, the Red Dragon in Bridgend was rewarded for its customer service, and the title of employee of the year was claimed by Maureen Roberts from the Red Dragon.
