Two Cardiff pubs have been named Brains’ best at an ‘Excellence’ awards ceremony honouring its pubs and people. The Welsh brewer and pub operator named the Ty Mawr in Lisvane the best managed pub, while the Romilly in Canton claimed the tenanted pub of the year title.
The Ty Mawr was a double award winner, also picking up the food award. After major refurbishment in 2011, the pub’s manager Graham Wheatley, has worked hard to grow the pub. As part of the development, part of the pub garden was turned into an allotment – allowing them to grow fruit, vegetables and even hops. "We have been able to make our own home-grown vegetable pickles, at Halloween our pumpkins were used in Brains’ ‘Squashed’ beer, and on Christmas Day we’ll be serving home-grown vegetables and new potatoes", says Graham.
The Romilly also picked up two awards – the second in recognition of their quality cask ales. The Canton pub has been run by Ian and Margaret Jones for more than ten years. Speaking of their award, Head of Retail, Philip Lay, said: "In today’s competitive market quality and customer service is paramount. Margaret, Ian and the team have incredibly high standards, which see them both retain loyal customers as well as attract new ones."
Philip Lay added: "While everyone is working hard across our pub estate, it is important that we reflect on, and enjoy, our achievements. The awards give us the opportunity to bring everyone together to recognise and celebrate the best operators in our retail business."
Eight other awards were given out on the night:
