Pontygwindy Pub Fundraising
Staff and customers at a popular Caerphilly pub are gearing up for the 4th Boobie Walk.
The five mile charity walk, which this year takes place on Saturday June 5th, is the brainchild of Pontygwindy pub manager Sue Hampton. Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and has since been committed to raising much needed cash for the hospital that treated her. So far, Sue, with the support of her husband Barry, staff and customers, has helped raise well over £20,000 for Velindre Cancer Centre.
The first Boobie Walk took place in July 2007 and has since become an annual summer event. Combined, the three walks held to date have raised more than £13,000. Regular quiz nights and raffles have helped raise additional funds, along with one off events, including a sponsored bike ride from Caerphilly to Ireland.
Sue said "I’m fortunate to have been successfully treated for breast cancer, but not everyone is that lucky. I wanted to make sure the hospital that treated me could carry on helping others. It was also my way of saying thank you to the hospital staff."
Julie Smith MBE, Appeals Officer at Velindre Cancer Centre said: "Sue and Barry have made a massive contribution and for that we are very thankful. They have worked tirelessly over the last few years, constantly coming up with new fundraising ideas that keep the money coming in. All money raised has gone directly to Breast Cancer Research."
