We are a small cask ale house in the city centre of Cardiff, right opposite the picturesque front entrance of Cardiff Castle.
We believe there has been a pub on this site since roughly 1830 (however accounts & sources vary), unfortunately we do not know any of the names of the pub at this time. In more recent history the pub was known as the Bluebell until 1995 when it was refurbished and the name was changed to the Goat Major. This ties in with it's affiliation to the Royal Regiment of Wales. Until the '95 refurbishment the pub had a small upstairs lounge as well as the ground floor bar. Some of the older regulars have informed us that the lounge used to be a 'men only' bar, however this unconfirmed.
Inside you'll find a range of local Cask ales from Brains Brewery which is situated just down the road from us including Brains Dark, Brains Bitter and straight off our back stillage and served right out of the cask Brains SA. To complement this we also have a revolving guest ale and regularly feature a host of new and interesting craft ales from Brains
If you find yourself hungry we offer a menu consisting entirely of pies ranging from the classical steak & ale right through to the more adventurous curried mutton or Pork, Bacon & black pudding. They're all home made as all good pies should be!
